- If you're not familiar with Frontier, it's a scripting language for the

- Menu Sharing for the Finder!
- ============================
-
- Here's everything you need to write scripts that live in the Finder's menu
- bar.
- In other words, menu sharing for the Finder!
-
- With the FinderMenu INIT and app, developed by Steve Zellers of Berkeley
- Systems, the System 7 Finder can receive structures of shared menus from
- Frontier. You can assign single keystrokes to commands. Scripts can operate
- on
- the Finder's selection.
-
- Includes a menu of sample (useful!) scripts and complete docs. Lots more!
-
- Requires System 7 and Frontier 1.0, expand with StuffIt Expander, available
- in
- the StuffIt & Family folder in Hot Apps.

-
- AliasZoo 1.4 is a major re-write of version 1.2.5. Now it locates all
- alias files on a selected volume, shows you clearly which ones no longer
- point to their owners, allows you to select aliases to delete or
- to re-connect to new owners. Now you can select multiple aliases and
- re-connect them all at once. Also includes a new feature that allows you
- to double-click on an alias file and see the location of it's owner.
- All functions have been re-written for speed (the delete function is
- dramatically faster).
-
- Requires System 7.
- Requires Compact Pro to unpack.

- Subject: [*] Bookends Mac Demo Upload
-
- Bookends Mac II is a HyperCard-based reference manager. It has fields for
- an article's or book's Authors, Title, Editors, Journal, Volume, Pages,
- Date, Publisher, Location, Abstract, and Keywords (each field can contain
- up to 30,000 characters). Information can be _rapidly_ retrieved by boolean
- searches (AND, OR, NOT) on any combination of fields. Reference information
- can be formatted to suit virtually any type of bibliographic style (e.g.,
- first author [surname first], second author [surname last], title, year in
- parentheses, volume, colon, page range, etc.) One can easily embed
- citations in documents (written in Word, WordPerfect, etc.) and Bookends
- will retrieve them, format them for a bibliography, and create a copy of
- the manuscript with the appropriate citations inserted (e.g., changing a
- citation to (1,2) or (Jones et al., 1989)). Bookends can download reference
- information from many national online databases and CD-ROMs. Finally, there
- are numerous features that make reference management easier (link any
- picture [such as one of a chemical structure] to a reference, a journal
- glossary that fills out a journal name after you type a few letters, an
- automatic alphabetized index of all authors and keywords in the database, a
- predefined "bank" of over 80 bibliographic formats for oft-cited journals,
- automatic removal of duplicate entries, etc.).

- version 1.01 Release(6/25/92):
- - bug fixed : bus error if QuickTime is on.
- - much better READ-ME documentation.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------
- BunchTyper is a utility designed for the Macintosh running under System 7.0 or
- later. BunchTyper does a simple task: changing the type/creator information
- of a file or a group of files, but just with the great flexibility.
-
- Changing the type/creator information of a file is so easy, right?
- There exist, however, three possible cumbersome difficulties that make a user
- to hesitate to change type/creator info of files:
-
- - it is not always easy to remember the type/creator codes.
- - when you want to change the type/creator info of many files located in many
- different locations(i.e., subfolders or disks), you need many repetitive
- operations.
- - if you made a mistake(i.e., changed to wrong type/creator), there's no easy
- way to restore the original info of files.
-
- BunchTyper is designed to overcome the above annoying situations.

-
- Thanks, Sak, for forwarding this.
- LB> The actual program seems to work very well even with
- LB> System 7.0 and Tuneup 1.1.1. But I would like to know if any
- LB> improvement have been done.
-
- Curiously, I revisited LPunch decoder only a few weeks ago, I gave a copy to
- Lloyd Wood (did he ever contact you? I suggested he should, for e-mail gen)
- and
- he said it was a bit flaky with certain cdevs and INITs. He didn't say which
- ones, but I recompiled it with the latest version, tarted up the icons with a
- bit of colour and sent him a copy of the resulting 1.1.2. Otherwise it's
- unchanged.
-
- Now that I no longer have free access to e-mail (and insufficient need to pay
- for access) I can't get hold of any test files from EARN or anywhere else. So
- I
- have neither incentive to make further improvements, nor material to test them
- on. I did suggest to Lloyd that he do some tests, but I haven't heard anything
- >From him; I assume that if he was still having problems he would have let me
- know. The algorithms as they stand were pretty exhaustively tested before
- 1.1.1
- was released.
-
- The application does pretty well everything I wanted of it, and nobody came
- up
- with any suggestions for improvements when it was new; so I assume that either
- everyone is happy with it or few people are using it. I don't want to fall
- victim to creeping featurism!
-
- I have uploaded 1.1.2 to HQ F32, and sent DNC a message suggesting that he
- delete the earlier version. Feel free to forward 1.1.2 on to the Info-Mac
- archives, or anywhere else you and Louis Bergeron think fit. There should
- still
- be a copy of 1.1.1 on the Dublin archive, BTW.

-
- Susannah,
-
- There is a version of gawk that runs as an MPW tool, which is probably
- the most straightforward way to manage that sort of thing on a Mac.
- I have it lying around here somewhere, but I have never really exercised
- it so I can't promise it would make you smile... but it does run and
- my very limited fooling with it didn't reveal any weirdness. (Except what
- you would expect from awk anyway.)
-
- Odds are good that I got it from sumex-aim.stanford.edu, although there are
- other sources. I'll bet it is also on ftp.apple.com. If you have trouble
- finding it, let me know and I could send you a copy.

-
- No, Jean-Luc, you have no touble with hqx because it is TEXT, not because
- it is only a data fork. Text files have only a data fork, true, but that
- is only part of the problem. You can create a data-fork-only binary file
- via the macbinary/mac AFE translators in the archives. That is, after all
- why the MacBinary format (binhex 5) was created. Then you get into Kermit
- file type. Even with a data-fork-only file, I must tell my mainframe-side
- Kermit to SET FILE TYPE BINARY before transmitting a binary file, else it
- will do a perfectly horrible job of sending it as text. With White Knight
- I need not worry about the Mac-side Kermit. It knows all about MacBinary.
- With the Kermit program, however, I suspect you would have to tell it to
- set file type to binary before either sending or receiving.
-
- And in any event, you must get a file to be uploaded into MacBinary fmt,
- else you cannot post it en toto to the archives. Same for downloading a
- bin file. You must be able to decode from Macbinary to Mac.
-
- Yale's TinCan (free at Virginia Tech) is no brighter. A colleague down
- the hall could not do beans with the Mac "bin" files he downloaded. Even
- when he set the communications parameters properly. I gave him the AFE

- Many people have realized that the desktop metaphor is actually inconsistent

-
- Currently,
- (1) if I drag a file/folder from one location to another IN THE SAME DISK,

- (2) If I drag it TO ANOTHER DISK, the Finder copies it.
-
- When I press OPTION while dragging, case (1) above becomes a COPY, whereas

- DiskFitPro (Q)
- I am a (relatively) happy user of this package and have been since
- DiskFit 1.4. However, I believe it has a bug. I have a Mac at home and at
- my office, and regularly use my DPI44 Syquest to back my working files up on
- the one machine, then restore to the other to maintain a continuous working
- environment. Because I am somewhat of a heavy user, anywhere from 20 to 200
- files may get changed in a day, so the cartridge is always in flux. All
- goes well for the first ten or so backups to a freshly formatted cartridge,
- and then a backup fails to copy some or all files properly, leaving the
- directory of the target cartridge corrupted. Norton + re-initialize yields
- only the 10M or so that was unused, and the cartridge must be reformatted.
- Sometimes DiskFit will report its failure to copy properly to the
- backup, but many times it will not, and the first I will know about the
- problem is when the restore operation fails on being unable to read the
- corrupted disk. (At this point, far more than just the files last copied
- are inacessible.) The restore operation itself never fails; that is the
- problem ocurrs only with backup to the cartridge. I am running Mac IIfx 8M
- with various APS HDs, and a ton of extensions & system 7 with tuneup. The
- cartridge drive is a DPI 44. Had the same problem with DiskFit 1.5 and
- system 6.0.5 and 6.0.7 (but few things ever worked right under 6.0.7.)
- Moral: unless you work as I do, DiskFitPro is probably safe.
- Problem: I think that the entries in the directory are not being
- properly marked as unused when files are deleted from the cartridge, causing
- the directory eventually to run out of useable space. Or, DiskFit cannot
- properly re-use a previously used directory entry position. Or, somehow
- else, DiskFit loses track of the directory structure on a disk with a lot of
- deleted directory entries, or goofs up in reading or writing a directory
- sector for some obscure reason.
- My answer: Soon, I got to get something more reliable.

-
- When I said I'd like some additional time to use shareware without paying,
- I forgot to mention that the assumption would be that the shareware would
- eventually be paid for. This was a mistake on my part that undoubtedly
- resulted
- in a whole lot of confusion.
-
- I'm going to try to make this a little clearer for everyone. All I am asking
- for--NOT demanding, just requesting--is shareware that will allow users to
- have
- a fully functional program that can be registered at their convenience. This
- is
- the approach I use.
-
- There is an inherent problem with that strategy, in that the software might

- The only way to guarantee you'll get your full money's worth is to go
- commercial. Sad but true. Authors need to decide if the values of the
- shareware
- concept outweigh the risk of not getting paid. To me, the values outweigh the
- risks. Granted, I don't make a living writing programs. If I did, my views
- would probably be different--and I wouldn't be writing shareware.
-
- These are my opinions. Everyone, worldwide, would prefer that most people, if
- not everyone, shared their opinions. If you choose to ignore my opinions,
- fine.
- Write any old crippled program you want--just don't expect me to use it.
-

- Thanks for your response to plugging in/out of a sleeping PB.

- > either powered up or asleep (unless they're really big on HD
- > hacking), so they're going to have to turn their machines one when
- > they plop 'em on the desk anyway.
-
- Au contrare. I NEVER shut down my PB and have never had a problem. I
- think Apple's advice not to move a sleeping PB is hogwash. The heads
- are just as parked when asleep as when shut down. The only "danger"
- is if the thing accidentally wakes up, which is impossible unless
- you somehow press a key (a tough trick with the case closed). Of
- course, theoretically the Power Manager does allow for software to
- wake up the mac (at least the Mac Portable), but I've never seen any
- software take advantage of this.
-
- BTW, I even change batteries without shutting down: just put
- the PB to sleep, plug in the AC adaptor, change the batteries, and
- unplug the adaptor. Won't work on an airplane, but works wherever
- you have an AC outlet. (I know. Apple recommends not running the
- thing without a battery in place. But it works just fine. Just don't
- be changing batteries with the thing awake because you don't want to
- jostle a PB with the disk spinning.)
-
- However, I'm still sufficiently port-paranoid that I think I'll
- refrain from plugging/unplugging stuff in sleep mode.( At least SCSI
- and ADB. The Localtalk and Faxmodem ports don't seem to be
- as dangerous; at least I've never heard of a motherboard fried by
- plugging in Localtalk with the power on.)
- The Power Manager chapter of Inside Mac implies that the power
- manager chip does indeed shut off power to the ports, but I'd like
- to get the real story before I try it.

- Howdy y'all,
-
- I've been reading the postings about MacTCP and FTP client packages with much
- interest, but little comprehension. So here's my baby question:
-
- How do I put my Mac on the Internet?
-
- OK, I realize that that's pretty vague, but if someone could just point me
- toward a book that I could get via the library or something, that would be
- great.
-
- What I want (maybe I'm dreaming, I dunno) is to be able to FTP stuff from the
- archives directly onto my hard disk. What I do now is FTP them to my VAX
- account and then use MacKermit 0.99(94) to dial up the VAX and, running
- Kermit-32 on the VAX, download to the Mac. Trouble is, my disk quota on the
- VAX
- is laughably small (1000 blocks, or 512 K) and I don't even want to talk about
- why I can't get it increased. But sometimes I'd like to be able to download
- big stuff...
-
- I don't really care about speed (or price; I'm planning on winning the lottery
- next week). Seriously, though, I'd just like to understand it, even if I
- can't
- do it.
-
- Thanks a lot for any leads or info you can offer.

-
- The Word 4/5 Commands option has been mentioned on this list, almost as a
- fix for "missing" menu items.
-
- It seems a great shame to leave it in this light - it provides an excellent
- facility for customizing your copy of Word, menus/commands, to fit *your*
- way of working.
- You can use it to get rid of those menu items that you never use (or don't
- understand!!), to add others that you *do* want, and to move things to
- different menus if you don't like where Microsoft put them.
- You can also add, remove or alter kbd shortcuts to suit you or to match
- other applications, and you can keep different versions of menu setups
- for different tasks. You can even alter the "Mac standard" short-cuts if
- you want to, but of course nobody would.....
-
- Sorry if this sounds like an ad for Microsoft, but this facility I really
- do like and curse other applications for not having it.
-
- PS I'm not sure if previous correspondence made clear that if you alter
- the menu settings you have to save the settings file, from the commands
- dialog box, if you want to keep the new settings.

- Subject: Problem with VM after RAM upgrade. Please help.
-
- Hello Netters,
-
- I recently upgraded my IIci from 5 to 12 MB. After the upgrade I encountered
- Problems with virtual memory. The story in steps:
-
- The starting config. was 4 SIMMS at 1Mbit, 4 SIMMS at 256 Kbit.
-
- I bought 4 SIMMS at 2Mbit, removed all SIMMS from the Mac,
- put the new 2Mbit ones into bank A (where formerly the
- 1Mbit SIMMS where located) and plugged the 1Mbit
- SIMMS into bank B (Where formerly the 256Kbit have been).
-
- Virtual mem. and 32bit adressing where off at power up. Looking at >about this
- Macintosh< showed 12MB internal memory. Ok so far.
-
- Then I turned on virtual memory, nothing happened. (Disk updated for use of VM
- of course). As the default for VM ist the same amount of disk space like RAM,
- the total would be 24MB which cannot be adressed in 24bit mode.
-
- So I turned on 32bit adressing and voila, the VM in the control panel appeared
- with the default value 24MB overall memory.
-
- Again >about this Macintosh< then he told me: Internal memory 12 MB (ok so
- far), overall memory 24MB (ok so far) and 24MB!! used on disk HD. This should
- be
- only 12MB! The message of 24MB used on disk is correct. He really reserves
- 24MB
- instead of 12 on my disk as far as my remaining diskspace is concerned. Also a
- disk analyze with Norton utilities' disk analyzer shows 24MB used for VM.
-
- PLEASE: How can I get this crazy mashine to correctly use the virtual memory
- as
- I really need it.

- Running 7.0.1 (tuned 1.1.1) with ATM 2.0.3 on a 6MByte LC printing to

- in graphics published and subscribed. Specifically, graphs generated in

- beautifully from within DG-Pro, but when Published and Subscribed to in
- MicroSoft Word 5.0 the curves look stair-stepped and the 90-degree rotated
- text reverts to a chunky bit-map. The DeltaPoint folks whacked at this for

- Kieran O'Connor asked recently if Soft PC would run Lotus 123,
- Wordperfect 5.1, and the like, what version of Soft PC to buy and
- whether he should accelerate his SE. A number of good response have
- appeared already, but I will add mine anyway.
-
- I keep Universal SoftPC on my Classic II and use it frequently to see
- what is on DOS disks, try out new DOS software without looking for a
- DOS machine, etc. I would never, ever, consider using it for serious
- production work. Computing and printing are just too slow. It is not
- cheap at $199.
-
- There is a faster version, Soft AT, but at a street price of $299. I'm
- sure you could buy a used XT with an EGA card and a colour monitor for
- only slightly more than that, and you would have a faster machine. You
- would also have two machines at home, so the DOS user wouldn't be
- tying up the Macintosh, and vice versa.
-
- I have tried WP 5.1 under Soft PC and it certainly works, but there
- are two drawbacks. First, if you don't have an extended keyboard on
- the SE, you will find the function-key equivalents annoying. Second,
- WP 5.1, like many DOS programs, seems to require a colour monitor.
- Running it with Soft PC on the Classic II, I could not find any way to
- make the cursor visible on my monochrome screen, and using WP 5.1 with
- an invisible cursor is a challenge I can do without.
-
- As to whether to buy an accelerator for the SE, the answer is most
- emphatically "yes", whatever you are using the SE for, especialy if
- you are runing System 7. I recently put a NewLife 16+ board into my
- old Plus and turned it back into a usable machine. The newest Mac
- software is just too big to run efficiently on 68000 machines.
